The console story

Lynx began as Epyx’s Handy project before Atari brought it to market in 1989. Its design allowed the unit to be rotated for left-handed use.[1]

The Suzy graphics chip supported sprite scaling and other graphics operations. ComLynx connected multiple handhelds, and Lynx II revised the physical design in 1991.[1]

Why it mattered

A different portable design

Color, flexible orientation and linked play gave the Lynx a distinct approach to portable gaming, supported by arcade adaptations and original software.[1]

Lynx remained a smaller competitor to Game Boy, despite its color display and technically distinctive hardware.[1]
