The console story

Game Gear launched in Japan in 1990. The built-in light made the display usable in dark conditions, while six AA batteries supplied portable power.[1]

Sega offered a TV tuner, rechargeable battery accessories and a car adapter. The optional Master Gear converter supported selected Master System software.[1]

Why it mattered

Color away from the TV

Its screen and accessory ecosystem emphasized portable color entertainment, with size and power demands that differed from Nintendo’s monochrome handheld.[1]

Game Gear competed directly with Game Boy but did not match its installed base. Its color screen also increased portable power demands.[1]
